Immune Landscapes

  • This research and documentary project investigates how ‘immunity’ as a legal category is applied to space. The video “Immune Landscapes 1″ presents an environment that is legally defined as immune in the Registry of Special Protection in the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The site of protection is a backup archive or ‘central refuge’ for state archives, which had been installed in a former silver mine in the Black Forest in South Germany in the 1960s. Its environment seemed to serve as an ideal backdrop, reiterating romantic tropes in the realm of planning protection. Here landscape doubles as a medium of preventive reason and an index of absence. The video was exhibited at Departure Foundation London and Redoubt Museum Eastbourne.
