Most ecosystem studies so far have been carried out in mature systems. Only limited knowledge exists on the very initial phase of ecosystem development. Concepts on the development of ecosystems are often based on assumptions and extrapolations with respect to structure-process interactions in the initial stage. To characterize the effect of this initial phase on structure and functioning of ecosystems in later stages, it is necessary to disentangle the close interaction of spatial and temporal patterns of ecosystem structural assemblages with processes of ecosystem development. The study of initial, less complex systems could help to better identify and characterize coupled patterns and processes. This paper gives an overview of concepts for the initial development of different ecosystem compartments and identifies open questions and research gaps. The artificial catchment site "Chicken Creek" is introduced as a new research approach to investigate these patterns and processes of initial ecosystem development under defined boundary conditions. metabolism. However, due to the methodological difficulties, there is little data that investigates this fundamental theory of aquatic ecology. Here, we report on progress made to combine numerical modeling with a series of manipulation to laboratory flumes overcoming methodological difficulties. In these flumes, hydraulic conditions were assessed using non-reactive tracer and heat pulse sensor. Metabolic activity was measured as the consumption and production of oxygen and the turnover of reactive tracers. Residence time and metabolic processes were modeled using a multicomponent reactive transport code called Min3P and calibrated with regard to the hydraulic conditions using the results obtained from the flume experiments. The metabolic activity was implemented in the model via Monod type expressions e.g. for aerobic respiration rates. A number of sediment structures differing in residence time distributions were introduced in both, the model and the flumes, specifically to model the biogeochemical performance and to validate the model results. furthermore, the DOC supply and surface water flow velocity were altered to test the whole stream metabolic response. However, due to the methodological difficulties, there is little data that investigates this fundamental theory of aquatic ecology. Here, we report on progress made to combine numerical modelling with a series of modification to laboratory flumes overcoming methodological difficulties e.g. by creating steady flow paths for assessment of metabolic rates. To model the biogeochemical performance and to validate the model results, sediment structures were introduced in both, the model and the flumes, leading to differing RT distributions. Furthermore, the DOC supply in the flumes was manipulated to test the whole stream metabolic response with regard to RT distributions. Both sediment drying and bedform migration can independently stress the microbial community residing in the riverbed. Here, we investigated the microbial response after exposure to these stressors with a focus on long-term recovery. We conducted an in situ experiment to investigate the long-term (8 months) functional and structural recovery of benthic microbial communities from either sediment drying (episodic severe stressor) or bedform migration (frequent moderate stressor). Stressed sediment associated communities were rewetted (dried sediments) and immobilized (migrated sediments) and exposed in the River Spree (north-eastern Germany) to initiate the recovery process. We then evaluated the microbial function (community respiration, net community production and extracellular enzymatic activities) as well as the bacterial, fungal and diatom community structure (16S rRNA gene and ITS region metabarcoding, and microscopic diatom morphotype classification). We observed different recovery times for community respiration (less than 7 days) and gross primary production (more than 5 months), implying a shift toward net heterotrophy in the first few months after stress exposure. Similarly, we observed a strong autotrophic community response (particularly associated with the diatoms Navicula and Fragilaria), especially in migrated sediments. The bacterial and fungal community response to sediment drying was stronger than to bedform migration (particularly associated with the bacterium Flavobacterium and the fungi Alternaria sp. and Aureobasidium pullulans). Our results show that sediment drying and bedform migration had a significant impact on the microbial community function and structure, which persisted for several months after the stress. Due to the surprising long period of recovery, successive stress events combined with seasonal effects will likely hamper the ongoing recovery process with severe alterations to the microbial function and structure. These findings extend the concept of ecosystem resilience and stability on the dimensions of timescale and seasonal environmental variations. We determined the concentration, chemical composition, radiocarbon age, and bioavailability of DOC along the hydrological flow path from soil solution to a downstream pond in a recently constructed catchment (Chicken Creek Catchment, Germany). Soil solution, upwelling ground water, subsurface water in an alluvial fan, and pond water all had high DOC concentrations (averaged 6.0 - 11.6 mg DOC L-1), despite small carbon stocks in either vegetation or soil of the catchment. The mean 14C age of DOC in upwelling ground water was 2600 to 2800 years. Solid-state CPMAS 13C NMR revealed a higher proportion of aromatic compounds (32\%) and a lower proportion of carbohydrates (33\%) in upwelling ground water compared to pond water (18\% and 45\%, respectively). 14C age and 13C NMR spectra suggest that DOC was partly mobilized from charred organic matter inherent in the Quaternary substrate. In a 70-days incubation experiment, 20\% of the total DOC was found to be bioavailable, irrespective of the water type. Origin of the microbial communities within the catchment (enriched from soil, stream sediment or pond water) had only marginal effects on overall DOC utilization. Overall, our data suggest that both recent and old DOC support microbial activity during early ecosystem succession, although a large fraction of the DOC is recalcitrant and eventually exported from the catchment once it has been mobilized.}, language = {en} }
